Exciting new dawn for employer-led technical qualifications at level 3

A new employer-led approvals system for level 3 technical qualifications has been launched by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).
IfATE followed the lead of the Skills for Jobs White Paper, which set out an exciting vision for all technical education to be employer-led in a simpler and better skills system, when designing the new approvals process.

Level 3 – Occupational progression technical qualifications – 16-19 and adult
Regulation and recognition:
To submit qualifications to be considered for approval by IfATE, applicants must ensure they are recognised by Ofqual to offer qualifications at level 3 in the associated sector subject area.
Qualifications regulated by Ofqual and the organisations offering them are expected to be compliant with the General Conditions of Recognition, as well as relevant qualification level conditions.

World class, simpler skills system: Quality boost for lower level qualifications supporting people onto careers ladder

The latest major step forward is being taken with creating a simpler skills system that will give employers the guiding hand with making sure all training is world class.
The new employer-led approvals system, which IfATE launched for level 3 technical qualifications in January 2023, is now being extended to level 2.

The board has set the vision for the organisation and intend to realise this through three strategic priorities.

What are the occupational maps?
The maps group together occupations with related knowledge, skills and behaviours into 15 routes. This makes it easier to see how they relate to one another.

Trailblazer groups
With our support, the role of a trailblazer group is to:
develop a new apprenticeship for an occupation. This involves writing the occupational standard and end-point assessment plan (EPA) and collating funding evidence to inform our funding band recommendation, for an agreed occupation proposal
revise the apprenticeship as needed.
