Working alongside registered doctors providing medical care as an integral part of a wider healthcare team.
This occupation is found in a range of employers across the NHS and Primary Care. Physician associates are a healthcare profession regulated by the General Medical Council in the UK (as of 13th Dec 2024). They currently work in over 40 specialties across GP practices, hospitals and community care, with roles determined by local need and decisions. The largest proportion of Physician associates work with doctors and other colleagues in primary care, followed by emergency and acute medicine. Other specialties include geriatrics, stroke, community and dermatology.
Physician associates are generalist healthcare professionals who work alongside doctors and provide medical care as part of the multidisciplinary team. They always work under the supervision and ultimately direction of a named senior doctor. A Physician associate delivers aspects of patient care through defined tasks and procedures. This may include:
Physician associates work in teams, and rely upon collaboration and supportive working relationships with their supervising doctors, with whom they can discuss cases, seek advice and review patients.
Physician associates must always operate within the limits of their competence. The General Medical Council specifies the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to practise safely at the point of registration, but an individual Physician associate’s scope of practice may change over time as their knowledge, skills and experience develops.
Entry requirements for the apprenticeship will be agreed between the employer and the GMC approved programme provider.

Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End-Point Assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3. A British Sign Language (BSL) qualification is an alternative to the English qualification for those whose primary language is BSL.
